“Buzz buzz buzz goes the bumblebee” – The
Hollywood Flames
The 9th Annual Digitalization in Oil and Gas Conference
is scheduled for September 14-15, 2023, Houston, TX
Ah! Digitalization! The word conjures up magical solutions to intractable
problems. But let’s get real. “Digitalization” means different things to
different people.
So, while attending the 9th Annual Digitalization in
Oil and Gas Conference is worth considering, for all the usual reasons,
it might be useful to take some time to explore what “digitalization” actually
means.
Taking the time and spending the money to attend a digitalization conference
can be useful. But you can enhance your experience by studying what each of the
buzz words actually means.
Digitalization covers a lot of ground. Blockchain, IIoT, digital twins, edge
computing, all are buzz words pertaining to the “digitalization” concept. But
what do any of these terms actually mean?
Googling each buzz word is an obvious and useful approach. Another approach is
to take the time to read the abstracts of review articles that discuss each
concept in more detail.
TIP: Define the terms. A simple Google search …

Edge Computing Vs. Cloud Computing: An Overview Of Big Data
Challenges And Opportunities For Large Enterprises

Cloud Computing: Cloud Computing is a
centralized computing architecture that enables enterprises to utilize in-demand
computer system capabilities, including computing power and large data storage
on the cloud without direct interference by the user. In Cloud Computing, data
can be located at more than one local location including third-party servers.
Some examples of Cloud Computing include services like Dropbox, Microsoft Azure,
and Rackspace. Cloud solutions are used in large enterprises for increased
elasticity, agility, ease of processing, and accessibility.
Edge Computing: Edge Computing is a distributed
computing architecture that enables enterprises to utilize data collection,
analysis, and processing on the edge of the network with direct interference
from the user. Edge technology processes data as close to its physical source
as possible. Some examples of Edge Computing include autonomous vehicles, fleet
management devices, remote gas, and oil monitoring, predictive maintenance
devices, and smart agriculture and surveillance. Edge Computing devices make
intelligent self- decisions and real-time responses based on information
acquired through IoT devices
Both Cloud Computing and Edge Computing help large
enterprises make use of intelligent tools, including machine learning
capabilities and statistical tools. The method of storing and analyzing data is
the same with both technologies; however, the difference lies in the physical
location, the speed by which the data is analyzed, and the amount of data
analyzed at a time. And because of these differences, where one lacks, the
other offers a unique opportunity.

6 FEATURED TRACKS
For 8 years the IoT in Oil and Gas conference has been the must-attend
digitalization event for the oil and gas industry. Whilst the conference
largely focused in IoT technology, the integration of IoT with digital
technologies led us to co-locate the conference with 5 other tracks – and one
exhibition hall.
More than cryptocurrency, Blockchain technology is changing the oil and gas
industry. Digitalization in Oil and Gas is your opportunity to learn about this
groundbreaking innovation as it spreads across the industry. Our Blockchain
track for conference attendees is your chance to see how Blockchain can be the
difference maker for your company.
Digital Twins are widely recognized as a game changer for oil and gas
companies. Merging cloud computing, advanced simulation, virtual system
testing, AR/VR and machine learning, digital twins is improving decision-making
in real-time by providing a virtual representation of a physical process. The
Digital Twins track will equip you and your company with the insight to make
informed and improved data-driven decisions from subsurface modeling and
rig-design, to production, safety and field resource.
Edge computing is widely recognized as a critical tool in bridging the
information gap, particularly in remote or offshore locations with unreliable
internet connections. With the fast growth of IoT devices in the energy
industry, operators and service companies need a flexible infrastructure to
manage their data, leverage insights and achieve predictive maintenance. Edge
computing provides oil and gas providers the infrastructure they need to
operate efficiently no matter where they are.
As the world gets more and more connected, so too is the oil and gas industry.
Innovations in bandwidth communications, 5G, and LoRa networks are rapidly connecting
even the most remote work areas. Companies from every corner of the world are
utilizing more ways to keep all aspects of their businesses connected.
Oil and Gas companies are investing heavily in enabling the mobility of its
workforce, equipping them with the technology to improve outcomes in ESG,
productivity, safety and retention. Field service technology is providing
operators and service companies with an improved agility to meet existing and
new challenges.
