Stay Alert (Without Caffeine)

Google® Scholar alerts are a godsend. They can help you scan the Web and still get your eight hours of sleep each night.

I like to think of them as a poor man’s AI-Artificial Intelligence. When you create an Alert, you are, in effect, creating an algorithm. And it is so easy, even I can do it.

All you need to do is to create thoughtful search statements, designed to retrieve items of interest to you.

For example, here are a few of the alerts I have created to help me stay on top of developments in areas of interest to me. The search statement of each alert is highlighted in red. Following each alert are recent results delivered to my inbox.

TIP: Visit Google® Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/ ). Enter a search statement, say, hydrodesulfurization. On the results page, in the left hand column, click Create Alert. You’re done! Afterwards, Google will remain alert even when you’re not.
