Decarbonisation May 2024 (MACRO MICRO)

Decarbonisation Technology (www.decarbonisationtechnology.com ), a quarterly magazine affiliated with the organization that produces the venerable Petroleum Technology Quarterly (PTQ), is worth a look. Its articles are of the same quality as those you’ll find in PTQ. The focus, no surprise, is on technology that helps us lower emissions of carbon and methane into the atmosphere.

After reading the latest issue, I noticed something else … Macro vs. Micro. In other words, there are articles that describe ways in which policy can help with the decarbonisation effort.  That would be the Macro level.

On the other hand, there are articles that focus on specific case studies using existing technology to execute decarbonisation efforts … That would be the Micro level.

In the latest issue, for example, there are two articles that illustrate the point.

At the Macro level, Decoding the complexities of decarbonisation addresses the fact that “decarbonisation is a complex process influenced by various interrelated factors that underscore the multifaceted approach needed to achieve net zero goals.”

At the Micro level, Integrating CCS and synthetic fuels production in a refinery describes a “configuration for a hybrid refinery as a fuels production center using proven and existing technologies, operating in tandem with existing units.”

Both articles are worth browsing.

TIP: take a couple of minutes to examine Table 1 in the Macro article. The table lists a number of organizations and standards that I was not aware of.

Excerpts from the table, with URL links to further information, appear below …

Conference Alert: North American Refining Technology Conference, January 2024 in Houston

Houston has three seasons. July, then August, followed by summer. -- Stan Musial (American baseball outfielder and first baseman)

Here is the text of a recent email alert that landed in my inbox …

///////
Hi Jean

We are delighted that the North American Refining Technology Conference is taking place on January 30 - 31 2024, reuniting our North American downstream network in Houston.

The 2024 agenda-at-a-glance is now live, following conversations led by Chevron, Motiva, PBF Energy, Par Pacific, ExxonMobil, Shell, and many more, to identify the key topics to address at this year's conference, including:

    How can refiners capitalize on the IRA act and position North America as the global refining leader?
    Pragmatic approaches to decarbonization – how companies are structuring and diversifying their offerings in 2024?
    Who defines what successful digital transformation look like?
    How can we overcome the main inhibitors to increased sustainable fuel production, converting at the right time, place and pace?

If you would like to discuss speaking or partnership opportunities at NARTC to share thought leadership and broaden your network, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

Kind regards,

Elizabeth Cannon

Conference Alert & Call for Speakers: Carbon Tracking and Reporting Canada Conference

“The simplest toy, one which even the youngest child can operate, is called a grandparent.” -- Sam Levenson

I am a grandfather. I am in pretty good health for a man of my age. But I know that I will not be around to experience the worst effects of global warming. I also know that my grandkids will be. That pains me. So I am excited whenever a conference dedicated to climate change issues announces an event.

A recent email alerted me to the 2nd Annual Carbon Tracking and Reporting Canada Conference, to be held in Calgary, Alberta. The dates of the conference will be, either, November 29-30, or December 5-6, 2023. There is a bit of a discrepancy on their Web site (https://carbontrackingandreporting.energyconferencenetwork.com/canada23)

I’m sure they’ll clarify soon. In any case, it is worth considering the call for speakers. Here is the text of the email I rec’d describing the event.

///////
Having run the inaugural event in November of 2022, we are excited to announce our 2nd Annual Carbon Tracking and Reporting Canada Conference will be held on November 29-30, 2023, in Calgary.

This conference is a must-attend event for professionals dedicated to tracking and reducing carbon and methane emissions in Canada in alignment with Canada's 2030 emissions targets. ESG has quickly become the focus of many investors in the oil and gas industry, making metrics a mandatory demand before any investment.

Call for Speakers
Oil & gas operators interested in presenting a case study or joining a panel session are encouraged to contact me to discuss a place in this year's program.

Sponsorship/Exhibition Now Open
If you are interested in a sponsored speaking session, showcasing your solutions in our buzzing exhibition area, hosting private meetings, branding your company as a leader in emissions tracking, and meeting with hundreds of qualified buyers, all in just two days out of the office, download the sponsorship prospectus.
