Venture capital (VC) firms offer another glimpse into the world of breakthrough
technology. VC typically acts as a
magnet for promising startups (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venture_capital). Startups seeking funding to ramp up often
will approach one or more VC firms.
These firms will then perform due diligence (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Due_diligence)
to determine whether to invest.
Once a VC has selected a company, it often will list it in its portfolio on its Web site. This is valuable information for anyone trying to identify breakthrough technology.

- Since the focus of VCs varies, the first step is to identify those VCs whose focus matches your interests.
- Step two is to browse the portfolios of your selected VCs to identify interesting companies.
- Step three is to visit the Web site of each selected company.
- Step four is to research the company as best you can. This can be difficult for startups, since there often is little independently produced information available on the Web.
