Playing Ketchup: PennWell Reading List

“Shake and shake the catsup bottle. None will come, and then a lot'll.” ― Richard Armour

Sheltering in place? This may be a good time to catch up on some PennWell classics.

TIP #1: While you may know a lot about your particular part of the oil and gas industry, it can’t hurt to brush up on other areas. PennWell offers a number of books that can help.

TIP #2: Even if you know everything about everything, some of your younger associates might benefit from reading one or two of these books. You might want to suggest that they interrupt their binge watching to do so.

Here are four to consider. And, bonus, they are all on sale at a discounted price.

Nota bene, PennWell books (https://www.pennwellbooks.com/) is now owned by Endeavor Business Media (https://www.endeavorbusinessmedia.com/), which may explain why the PennWell classics are on sale.

Books

Two things will always be with us … books and real news.

As Mark Twain once said …
“Good friends, good books, and a sleepy conscience: this is the ideal life.”

To that end, PennWell has announced the publication of several books that should be in your personal library. And if your organization has a library, ask your librarian if they are on order.

They are books worth reading even if you think you don’t need to. Because if you don’t need to, maybe your boss, the one who decides where the money goes, maybe your boss does.

And if he or she does not have time to read them, maybe you should read them to refresh your memory to help you make your case for whatever project is important to you.

So, here are the PennWell books you might consider adding to your collection …

Nontechnical Guide to Petroleum Geology, Exploration, Drilling & Production, 4th edition
Ever wonder how oil and gas forms in the earth? This non-technical guide explains not only how it's formed, but how to find it, how to drill for it, how to evaluate wells, how to complete wells, how to produce gas and oil, and how to revive mature fields. Readers are also introduced to newer concepts such as drilling unconventional shale reservoirs which have revolutionized the industry and changed the world market!
The latest edition has been updated to include:
    New, colored figures and plates
    Present-date statistics
    Modern techniques and equipment
A glossary of need-to-know industry terms
Italicized key words and phrases in the text

Thermal Processing of Hydrocarbons: Petroleum to Petrochemicals
A must-read for the latest generation of scientists, engineers, and researchers in the petroleum industry.
In this first-of-its-kind book, the author summarizes and systematically leads readers through all aspects of the thermal cracking processes from the research laboratory to the commercial applications of the petrochemical industry. This book discusses thermal processing of hydrocarbons — with a special emphasis on lighter hydrocarbons — whose main source is shale gas and tight oil that’s recently been made abundant through fracking technology. This book details many technical parameters involved in choosing a process when considering the type of feedstocks; operating conditions; selectivity of the desired product; the market to be targeted; and the environmental regulations to be met while also considering the economic parameters such as the investment and profit margin that govern the final choice.
The latest edition has been updated to include:
An introduction to the basic chemistry behind thermal processing, classifications, molecular structures, kinetics and thermodynamics, free radical reaction mechanisms, and product distributions.
A focus on shale gas and tight oil production, properties, and processing as important sources of petrochemicals.
Emphasis on the ‘petroleum to petrochemicals’ which has recently transformed the petroleum industry across the globe.
An illustration of conversion technologies — how the paraffinic hydrocarbons are converted into various petrochemicals and eventually lead to the finished products.
Insight into the future of hydrocarbons based on environmental issues.

International Petroleum Accounting, 2nd edition
Get the latest and greatest on U.S. accounting standards and the International Accounting Standards Board (IFRS)in this comprehensive guide to accounting standards. This 2nd edition focuses on accounting standards and guidance issued by the IFRS, the U.S. Financial Accounting Standards Board, and the U.S. Securities Exchange Commission as they relate to accounting and reporting for global petroleum-related operations. The new edition also includes a detailed, point-by-point comparison of U.S. and IFRS standards spanning all significant accounting topics from initial exploration and evaluation of potential oil and gas prospects through production and final abandonment, also including the latest standards relating to revenue recognition, leases, and joint operations.
