IEEE XPLORE (Part 2): Most Cited

“God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I am so far behind that I will never die.” -- Bill Watterson (American Author of the comic strip Calvin & Hobbes, b.1958)

Sorting IEEE Xplore search results by “Most cited” can be a big time saver.  Take a simple search on “desulfurization,” for example.

After the search engine presents its results, click the Sort By drop down and select “Most cited.”  In this case, the most cited article is “Magnetic desulfurization of coal,” by S. Trindade et al.  Written in 1973, it has been cited 12 times.

That is not a huge number, but still respectable.

So what can you do with this number?

The cite number provides a clue as to how authoritative an author is in the eyes of his or her peers.  It can help identify …

1 Core articles in a particular field
2 Experts working in the field
3 Organizations supporting research in that field

By clicking the “Cited by” link at the bottom of an article, you can follow the hyperlink express to other potential core articles and expertise.

In our next post (IEEE XPLORE-Part 3), we’ll explore the “Metrics” feature of IEEE Xplore.
